Thai social media featured a video showing 8 monks and novices celebrating and drinking alcohol inside their temple. Another video and a screenshot of the conversation also indicated that the monk had an intimate relationship with the novice.
The festival has been identified as taking place at the Nikom Kitiyaram temple in the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchatani. The temple abbot responded to questions saying that these were old footage and that 2 monks in the group in the video had already been forced out of monasticism. But others who joined the party were still at the temple and would be questioned about the incident and appropriate discipline bestowed.
The first video featured 8 monks and novices gathered in their rooms with alcohol and food. They were also singing “Happy Birthday” instead of doing their Buddhist chants. The other video clearly showed that 2 of the monks were in an intimate relationship and hugging.
There was also a conversation posted on social media between 2 of the monks saying he had broken up with a novice and wanted to throw a party.
The Abbot, Prachot Kittikhun, informed the Thai media that the story happened 2 months ago during the New Year period. The monk and novice who were discovered having sex had traveled from another province and requested to stay at the temple.
The Abbot shared that he never noticed they were a couple until residents showed him the videos, but both declined any advice on the matter.
The couple have been forced to leave the aconite since the footage was discovered and released. According to the report, the other 6 monks present in the party and drinking alcohol were still in the temple and would be interrogated and punished.
