Thrissur: The number of alcohol consumers and alcohol sales are down in Kerala, according to a survey report prepared by the International Institute of Population Studies, Mumbai. The survey was conducted before the Covid outbreak in Kerala. The study took place as part of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS).
Data from the Beverages Corporation revealed that alcohol sales started to drop in the state from 2018. It is observed that this is not a consequence of the Covid pandemic. With the spread of Covid, sales fell again. Although the alcohol tax was increased by 45% in 2020 and 2021, revenues fell drastically in 2021.
